She stole a life. Now she must pay with her heart.

When nineteen-year-old huntress Feyre kills a wolf in the woods, a beast-like creature arrives to demand retribution. Dragged to a treacherous magical land she knows about only from legends, Feyre discovers that her captor is not an animal, but Tamlin—one of the lethal, immortal faeries who once ruled their world.

As she dwells on his estate, her feelings for Tamlin transform from icy hostility into a fiery passion that burns through every lie and warning she’s been told about the beautiful, dangerous world of the Fae. But an ancient, wicked shadow over the faerie lands is growing, and Feyre must find a way to stop it . . . or doom Tamlin—and his world—forever.

“The sky shifted into periwinkle, and the clouds filled with pink light. Then, like a shimmering disk too rich and clear to be described, the sun slipped over the horizon and lined everything with gold. It was like seeing the world being born and we were the sole witnesses”

Thoughts

Beauty and the Beast re-telling? SIGN ME UP! I assumed this book was only high fantasy… the kind that included kingdoms and assassins and the like. When I heard this book included faeries, I was ecstatic. I love me a good story about faeries. Then I heard it was a Beauty and the Beast re-telling and I knew I had to read it even more.

I shockingly really enjoyed this novel. I say shocking because I’m not one to love a really hyped up book  and this one is definitely hyped. Although the book isn’t perfect, I still found it to be a major page turning. I loved how Sarah J. Maas described the way Feyre saw the world of Prythian. It was very poetic.

A character by the name of Lucien was also an adorable, hilarious, and very sassy character. He was probably by far my favorite character in the whole story. Feyre bothered me a lot throughout the book, but I still found myself growing fond of her towards the end. And Tamlin is fairly sexy too. He’s not a huge book boyfriend, but sexy nonetheless. Hes caring and protective nature was a major turn on *tehehehe*

Along with the characters, I feel like Feyre got too much help and everything was too easy for her AS A HUMAN IN A FAE WORLD. She’s described as a helpless human but nothing comes hard for her. It was difficult to see any character development with her simply because she couldn’t. do. anything. alone.

As much as I adored the story, I found a lot of flaws that bothered me. One thing that really stuck out was how much description was in the book. It felt like the whole half of the book was world building and description after description after description. Because of this, there was barely any dialogue; therefore, I had a hard time connecting to the characters because I couldn’t get to know them.

With barely any dialogue, the relationship between Tamlin and Feyre didn’t seem believable. The love between them seemed to happen too fast. It wasn’t like an insta-love thing, but all of a sudden they’re tossing the “L” word around. Even though I didn’t see much connection, I still like them as a couple. (don’t ask me why….)

Some of the middle chapters also seemed so pointless. Nothing really happens in them and it felt like they were just thrown into the story with no real purpose. That being said, the beginning, middle, and end of the story didn’t seem to flow well with the story. It was like “world building”, “nothing is happening”, then bam “random action scenes”. It seemed choppy.

Towards the ending I started to sense a love-triangle brewing and just god no, please. I really hope there is no love-triangle in the second book.(update: I hear there is a love triangle, *eye roll*). I can’t stand love-triangles. Le sigh. Also the ending was slightly depressing. I wish there would have been a major cliff-hanger because I eat those up faster than you can say cliff-hanger. However, the premise was a great idea for a Beauty and the Beast re-telling. I’m really glad I gave this book a chance, despite all the hype around it. Definitely recommend it. (:

  1. Ohhhh I see that this is a problematic book that you can’t help but love? 😛 I LOVEEEE ACOTAR! The first time I read it, I was completely blown away and totally blinded to its flaws haha but even after realizing them, I still love it anyway. And don’t you worry, all the lack of character development and insta love here would be redeemed in book 2! As you already knew, there is a love triangle but it’s not cheesy! It’s so realistic and soon it won’t be a triangle anymore 😛 also, MAJOR. CHARACTER. DEVELOPMENT. For Feyre. And a whole set of lovable new characters! Great review 🙂

    1. Oh this is like music to my ears. I will have to buy Mist and Fury ASAP. For the first time in my life, I might find myself loving the second love interest more than the first. I’m so excited for character development! I love reading books where characters mature and grow stronger has a character. and yes, despite all the flaws, I still absolutely loved this book. (:

  2. I felt so meh it’s after reading ACOTAR, much for the same reasons you did. I never bought Tamlin and Feyre together, and Feyre annoyed me. But the next book. Oh my lordie the next book. Everything that was wrong in the first book was fully redeemed in the second book, and on a rereading of ACOTAR I liked it a lot better. But ACOMAF is AMAZING. I tore through it in two days, sneaking my Kindle under the desk as work. Feyre matures ten fold, and so many other amazing characters are introduced. The love triangle is hardly there, and incredibly real-world based .. it actually makes sense with the situation. Enjoy it, and can’t wait to hear what you think!
