The Poppy War || Pros? Cons? Oh my! *Spoilers*

BEWARE THIS POST WILL HAVE SPOILERS ABOUT THE FIRST HALF OF THE POPPY WAR

Hello! I’m here to talk about a book I am currently reading, The Poppy War by R.F. Kuang. . I’m having such weird feelings about this book so I just wanted to write my thoughts out on my blog for people who may understand (I don’t have any huge readers around me).

Book Review: The Poppy War – Read at Midnight

I’m currently reading The Poppy War on my kindle as well as listening to the audio-book from the library. I am currently on Part 2, Chapter 10, page 219. I’m having a hard time understanding my feelings. Some days I feel like DNFing it because I’m bored and other times I feel like I’m invested in finding about what happens because I’m 219 pages in.

I feel like nothing has happened yet. I know a lot of people think the pacing is amazing but I feel like it’s just dragging on and on. I’m not a huge fan of Rin. I feel like she’s kind of a biznatch. I get she has every reason to be but UGH. It makes me so mad. All she wants is power and I’m starting to get really annoyed. She’s just becoming greedy and hungry for it. She’s not treating master Jiang with much respect. It makes me want to pull my hair out.

Kitay is by far my favorite character. He seems so sweet and so far doesn’t seem to care about where Rin came from. HE EVEN LETS HER COME TO HIS HOME!? OMG. Honestly, I think he’s the only reason I’m still reading. Okay, I kind of enjoy Jiang’s character too. He’s really weird but kind of cool.

I’m just waiting for the war to begin. I’m wanting action. I think my favorite part was the trials. I enjoyed the part with Rin fighting the rest of the students. So far that’s been the only part I’ve truly enjoyed. The writing style isn’t bad but I feel like it’s not my cup of tea? I don’t have a problem with the world. I’m not sure what is my problem. I don’t like Rin and I feel like the pacing is so incredibly slow. The world-building is on point but I can’t get over the pacing. Does that even make sense? I feel like I’m just saying a whole lot of gibberish.

Have you ever had a book where you don’t know how to feel? I feel like this is a straight up 3 star book for me. I don’t like it but I don’t hate it. I DON’T UNDERSTAND WHAT I’M FEELING. THIS IS ALL SO NEW TO ME. Maybe I’ll enjoy this story more in Part 2 and 3. I hope so. Right now I’m just severely disappointed. Did you read it? Did you enjoy it? Hate it? Lemme’ know!

  1. Personally I absolutely loved this book! And I think if your 200 pages in, the war should start soon?! If I remember correctly!
But indeed sometimes a book is just mediocre for you, and it is hard to pinpoint why!
