Today I am coming at your with an author interview from a very special guest and my great friend, Natalie Cuddington! I met Nat several years ago on booktube and we have been friends ever since!

Nat is a Canadian author. She has self-published multiple YA books. She is also very engrossed in the book community by filming Youtube videos where she gushes all about books!

Writing & Book Questions!

One: When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?
I’m not sure if I can pinpoint an exact time, but definitely sometime in high school.

Two: how long does it take you to write a book?
It’s different for each one, although I’d say I probably spend the same amount of hours on each book, some books I just write in a shorter span than others. On average it probably takes me about six months to finish a draft.

Three: What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?
I almost always stop writing in the middle of sentence.

Four: Where do you get your inspiration for your books?
Most of the time I couldn’t tell you where I get ideas of inspiration from. It could come from a conversation about something specific with a friend that gets me thinking “oh this could make an interesting story”, or it could be a picture that I see and imagine a life behind it. Most of the time I don’t think my books are inspired by anything specific, although Tickets To Karasvale was directly inspired by a trip to Amsterdam

Five: When did you write your first book?
The first book I wrote was in grade 12, so 2005, and it was about 85 pages. The first book I wrote that I actually published, I started writing in 2012 or 2013. I don’t remember exactly, but it was around there somewhere. 

Six: What do you do when you’re not writing?
Read, binge TV shows, and workout mostly. 

Seven: How do you come up with the titles for your books?
By complaining to my friends about how I will never have a title for my book, haha. Titles are actually super hard for me. Chloe Diller was a title that my friend and I came up with sort of by accident because when she was reading the first draft, we kept call it “the Chloe Diller Book” until finally we just thought, “maybe it should be called Chloe Diller. “Saving Mason” went through three different names before I settled on one that felt right to me, and Tickets To Karasvale consisted of brain storming and many filled notebooks pages with the help of my boyfriend at the time. Titles are the worst, ha. 

Eight: What is the most different part of writing a story?
Picking a title, ha. But for real, I think it’s when I’m not writing it anymore. When all the drafts are done and I can’t go back and add things or change things anymore because it sort of feels like I’ve lost a friend. I get so lost in my stories when I write them, and creating worlds for my characters is almost like creating a world for myself too. When it’s over it’s like I’ve come home from dropping my best friends off at the airport and I’m never going to see them again. 

Nine: What book(s) were the most enjoyable for you to write?
I wrote a dual POV story with a friend of mine, and we alternated chapters. It took place over one night at a concert, and I LOVED writing it with her. It was always the highlight of my day when she emailed me her newest chapter. And then writing my chapter to go after it was always the easiest any kind of writing has ever come out of me. 

Ten:  Are you working on any new books at the moment? Can you tell us about it?
I’ve written the first draft of a cutesy YA romance (which has yet to be named, surprise, surprise), that follows a boy and girl who used to be friends, and have to become friends again when they get paired up in a school project. It’s super wholesome, deals with different family dynamics, and has LGBT+ and type 1 diabetes rep! I’ve also currently started writing a cutesy adult romance which features my two favourite love tropes: fake dating, and famous people falling in love with non-famous people. It also does not have a title. Because titles.

Random funsies!

Paperback or hardback?
This one always depends for me! It depends on what the cover looks like, really. Or if I have the money. Mostly I just like my books to match. But for physically reading, I think I think I like hardbacks better. It’s super easy to curl up in my chair and keep a hardcover open in my lap. 

Writing or Reading?
Writing, because getting lost in my own worlds always feels magical, even if there’s no magic involved. 

E-Book or audiobook?
Audiobook, but I’m not picky with them! 

Who is your favorite author?
It’s maybe weird to say this since she has only published two books, but Erin Morgenstern. Both of her books completely and 100% transported me into another dimension when I read them. I can’t get over how real she makes magic feel for me, and I just want to live inside her stores. I hope she never stops writing.

What is one book you could reread over and over again?
I have no idea! I haven’t read anything more than twice. But rereading Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone was a very magical experience, so maybe I’ll say Harry Potter.
