Books With Characters Of Color That I Want To Read

Hello and welcome to Black History Month!

I thought I would dedicate this blog post to all of the books I want to read that feature characters of color. All of these books are also written by women of color. ❀ I’m always scared to write one of these posts because I’m a young white woman and I don’t want to offend anyone. If I could be using a different term other that POC please, please, please let me know. Without further-ado, here we gooooo!!

Clap When You Land

Clap When You Land by Elizabeth Acevedo // A young adult story written in verse about two girls that learn of each other after their father passes away. This book sounds so incredibly powerful. I’m so beyond excited to read it one of these days.

The Poet X

Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo // Another young adult story written in verse about a girl who joins a slam poetry club and refuses to be silent. This has been on my TBR for ages.

The Gilded Ones (The Gilded Ones, #1)

The Gilded Ones by Namina Forna // An epic young adult fantasy where the color of your blood determines where you belong. Of course, the main character has β€œimpure” blood and thus forced to flee her village and fight. I love the cover of this so much.

Legendborn (The Legendborn Cycle #1)

Legendborn by Tracy Deonn // A young adult fantasy with demon creatures and a secret society that hunts them down. Can we just take a moment to appreciate this cover? I guess it’s a King Arthur retelling. I don’t know much about that, but the story sounds brilliant.

Cinderella Is Dead

Cinderella is Dead by Kalynn Bayron // A young adult fantasy retelling of Cinderella. The main character teams up with another girl to bring down the king once and for all. I’ve heard mixed reviews on this, but it sounds so good. Plus, the cover is BEAUTIFUL!

This Poison Heart (The Poison Heart, #1)

This Poison Heart by Kalynn Bayron // A young adult fantasy featuring a girl that can grow plants from tiny seeds, but a group of bad guys comes searching for her to obtain a rare elixir. The power to grow plants sounds like something I don’t think I’d ever read but it still sounds intense! But also, another gorgeous cover!

The Sound of Stars

The Sound of Stars by Alechia Dow // A young adult Sci-Fi featuring a girl and an alien that work together to save humanity. Music, art, and books are illegal, but the main character has a SECRET LIBRARY!? Sounds dope as hell. I’m so excited to check this out!

The Worst Best Man

The Worst Best Man by Mia Sosa // An adult romance featuring a wedding planner that was left at the altar and now has to work with the β€œbest man” from her failed wedding. Have we mentioned this β€œbest man” is the wedding planners ex-fiancΓ©s brother? Lots of drama is going to go down and I’m ready for it!

Blood Like Magic (Blood Like Magic, #1)

Blood Like Magic by Liselle Sambury // Another YA fantasy about witches and a girl who must fall in love and kill the boy to save her family. If she fails, everyone in her family will lose their magic. This sounds intense. I need, no – I must – read this.

A Song of Wraiths and Ruin (A Song of Wraiths and Ruin, #1)

A Song of Wraiths and Ruin by Roseanne A. Brown // Oh look, a young adult fantasy! This is a book inspired by West African folklore. Two characters are on a quest to kill each other but their attraction to each other is growing. Will they succeed in killing each other? I guess I better read it to find out! πŸ˜€

Akata Witch (The Nsibidi Scripts #1)

Akata Witch by Nnedi Okorafor // I’m on a YA fantasy kick! This is a fantasy staring an albino character who befriends some people that help her try and track down a man responsible for kidnapping and maiming children. This sounds CRAZY good. I’ve heard super good things about this, too!

Wings of Ebony (Wings of Ebony, #1)

Wings of Ebony by J. Elle // A young adult fantasy featuring a half-god, half-human. I’m not 100% sure what this is about but it sounds amazingggg. I love all things related to mythology. This sounds unique. I’m excited to check it out!

Nobody's Magic

Nobody’s Magic by Destiny O. Birdson // An adult fiction story that doesn’t come out until February 8th! I’m not 100% what this is about either, but I do know it’s about three women with albinism. It sounds interesting and it has super good reviews. I’m excited to check it out after it’s released! πŸ˜€

Have you read any of these? What did you think? I’m beyond excited to check them out! πŸ˜€
